Titanic Launch Day Painting – “Ladies who Launch”
Titanic’s launch day in Belfast, was 31st May 1911. A background of cheers went up from the 100,000 strong crowd of spectators during the launch of the great ship. It took a comparatively brief 62 seconds for all 24,360 tons of Titanic’s bulk to slide from her building berth into the water of Belfast Harbour. Still incomplete at this stage of construction, she was just a large hull containing engines and boilers. Almost a year’s worth of fitting-out work was yet to be completed at Harland & Wolff’s deep water wharf.
