Caracciola Mercedes vs Campari Alfa at Ards TT
Rudolf Caracciola’s Mercedes passes Scrabo Hill early in the 1929 Ards Tourist Trophy race, with Campari’s Alfa Romeo in hot pursuit. In sunshine here, before the weather broke!
The winning driver had previously been dubbed “Regenmeister” (Rain master) by the German press for his prowess in wet conditions. Caracciola’s fearlessly persistent driving style was perfect for the rainstorm that followed. Furthermore, having only Campari’s Alfa Romeo as serious competition, he took first place by a full two minutes.
